Am I Blessed?

Blessed!  This word is used often enough to day; in our vocabulary, printed on  clothing, or framed and hung on walls.  Whether one is blessed or not may be thought of based on how one chooses to define being blessed. And would being blessed be based on how things are going today, or how things pan out in the years to come?

Webster’s 1828 dictionary defines blessed as such: Blessed: Happy; prosperous in worldly affairs; enjoying spiritual happiness and the favor of God; enjoying heavenly felicity.

“Blessed is the man…” is how Psalm One starts out, and it is here that we will look at being blessed.  Verse 3, “And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth its fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall proper.”  Defined as bringing forth fruit, and not just where am I at today, but what about the end of my life.  Let’s look at 3 things from verse one.

First, they walk not in the counsel of the ungodly.  Sadly many people do not seek counsel in their decisions, nor the direction of their life.  Proverbs states that without counsel purposes are disappointed.  Others seek or follow the wrong counsel.  There is godly counsel and there is ungodly counsel.  Delight and meditation in the law of the Lord is mentioned in verse 2.  Both devotionally reading and studying God’s word helps us to know and to discern right from wrong according to the views of the Creator.

Second, we learn in verse 1, that to be blessed, one must not stand in the way of sinners.  Notice in verse 6, the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous, but the way of the ungodly shall perish.  As Biblical knowledge increases, growth takes place and the conscience is developed to discern right from wrong.  One’s life either demonstrates the way of the righteous or the way of the ungodly; one is blessed, the other will not end well.  Proverbs 14:12 “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.”

Lastly, Psalm 1:1 states to be blessed, one must not sit in the seat of the scornful.  There is much written about scorners in the book of Proverbs.  When one finds themselves on the wrong path there is a need to change, admit wrong, to repent. Sadly, too often instead, the decision is made to sit in the seat of the scornful.

It is not if my life looks blessed today, but where will my life be twenty plus years from now.  As we grow older, and reflect on the memories, life looks different.  I trust your life to be blessed today and more importantly for tomorrow.  Psalm chapter one offers food for thought.
