How to Overcome Discouragement

In times like these, it is easy to become discouraged. Often times in life’s tragedies people ask, “Where is God?” The Bible teaches us that God is always with us and is personally aware of our pain. Isaiah wrote concerning when Jesus was on the cross, “Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering” (Isaiah 53:4).

When Jesus was on the cross He supernaturally bore all the pain that the world has ever felt. Only the divine Son of God in the flesh could have bore such pain upon His soul- that is why Jesus alone is our Savior. As a result, when you face sad times, Jesus is literally the only person that can truly say, “I know how you feel!”

Likewise, the author of Hebrews wrote, “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need” (Hebrews 4:16). We are to come to Jesus with all of our hurts and confess, “Jesus, please take all my pain, hurts, and hangups because only you can carry my burden and discouragement.”

Be encouraged by the words of the old hymn, What a Friend We Have in Jesus, “What a Friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer! O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer!”

When we come to Jesus with our sadness and heavy burdens He promises to bind up and heal our broken hearts. Are you discouraged today? Come to Jesus and let Him give you rest for your weary soul, for He said, “28 Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30).

- Reflection -

Do you need Jesus to take any sadness in your life?

- Action -

1. Believe and confess Jesus as your Healer.

2. Come boldly to God’s throne of grace when you are sad to receive comfort and healing.

3. Share the love of Jesus with others when they are in pain (Romans 12:15).
