A Solid Foundation

So then we say with confidence: The Lord is my helper, and I will not be afraid. What will man do to me? Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:6, 8

Where were you when it happened? What were you doing when the news reached your ears? If you are old enough to remember the attacks 20 years ago on September 11, you remember. The images of the falling towers in New York City, the burning Pentagon in Washington D.C. and even the wreckage in that Pennsylvania farm field are etched in our minds. We remember. But as we remember that day and the horrors that it brought, we see fears, troubles, attacks and more have also engulfed us in the past 20 years. So where do we find comfort, peace, confidence, security?

The Christians to whom these verses were written endured many hardships. During the first through third centuries, Christians were gathered up, tortured, beaten and even killed. They saw their friends, their family, their loved ones die before their eyes. It is to these Christians that God had these words written down, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?”

These words were not only written for Christians who lived during the first centuries, but also for you today. You do not have to be afraid! Easy to say, right? We weren't trapped on a plane with terrorists. We weren't caught in a burning building. But what if we were? What if the terror struck closer to home? Can you really say, "I will not be afraid"?

Absolutely! For “the Lord is my Helper!” It is your Lord who has won the victory over sin, death and the devil. It is your Savior who has given you the spoils of that victory – forgiveness of sins and life everlasting in heaven. He is your solid foundation. You do not have to be afraid of events that happen in the world around you. You Lord is in control as He crushed the power of sin and has made sure that nothing, nothing can separate you from His love. How can you be so sure? Because – “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

As you face terrors, trials, and illnesses, will Jesus decide to forsake you? Will He decide not to help you? Will He in the end, when you need Him the most, at the point of death, leave you? No. Never. In this changing world, one thing remains changless: Jesus.

Continue to look to Him for comfort, for strength, for guidance, for hope because He is your solid foundation, a foundation that man cannot destroy, a foundation upon which you will can confidently stand and say - “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?”
